Shower Curtains : Advice On Buying The Perfect One

Posted under Bathroom by homeimprovement on Sunday 31 January 2010 at 8:15 pm

For most people, their day begins or finishes with a shower. They are not just about keeping clean; they also help relieve muscle tension and relax. Considering how often we spend in the shower, it makes sense to carefully choose the largest piece of the shower, and largest single item in the whole bathroom, the shower curtain.

Shower curtains, primarily, offer valuable functions whilst showering. They not only ensure that the water stays inside the showering area, but also provide privacy. Choosing the right curtain should start with this in mind.

To stop the curtain from collecting dust, dirt and mildew, or posing a tripping hazard, the hem of it needs to be at least an inch or two (2.5 to 5 cm) above the floor. However, to keep the water from spraying onto the floor, the curtain must reach below the top of the bath tub. There is some leeway regarding the exact height it needs to be. So, you can hang the curtain higher or lower depending on the age of the tub and how attractive it looks.

With so many styles and colors to choose from, never settle for one the does not perfectly match your bathroom. As a shower curtain is the largest single item in any bathroom, it really does have a huge effect on its look and feel.

Spend time considering what will go with the colors of the bathroom, and who will be using it, before making any purchase. You can find everything everything from football themes for sports enthusiasts, to cartoon themes for children. For those who prefer plain colors or simple designs, there are a wide range of those available too.

The type of material is another major consideration when deciding which shower curtain to buy. Most are made of vinyl, cloth and plastic. There are advantages and disadvantages for each type that need to be weighed when making a purchase.

Plastic and vinyl are commonly used as they are cheap and functional. Being naturally waterproof, they make great curtains for many. Then, they come in so many colors and styles, that they can fit any bathroom.

Some people prefer cloth because it generally looks look nicer. However, it costs more and is prone to mildew. Therefore, cloth curtains are often used with waterproof linings for greater functionality and a more elegant look on the outside.

There are other materials such as hemp, which is a heavy fabric produced from plant fiber. Since it is naturally resistant to fungus and bacteria, it is not so susceptible to problems such as soap stains or mildew. Furthermore, it does not require a liner.

Finally, whichever shower curtain you eventually choose, you will need to maintain it if you want it to remain doing its job, and looking good, for any length of time. It is advisable to wash and dry your shower curtain at least once a month. The better curtains can simply be machine washed in warm water, with a cup of bleach to kill bacteria. Inexpensive sprays can also be used to keep them free of mold.

Plans For Furniture Woodworking – This Frustrated Me To No End!

Posted under Furniture by homeimprovement on Sunday 31 January 2010 at 7:16 pm

I dang near gave up on trying to find woodworking plans for furniture that were actually created for the average person to comprehend without needing to decipher some kind of alien code!

The truth is, I really know the value of crafting wood items with your own two hands. The quality is almost always superior, as you can use REAL wood and not treated crap. Not to mention, it’s hundreds – if not thousands of dollars cheaper to build your own furniture pieces! And, of course, there’s the pride element, as well.

I recently saw a chair set at a department store – two nice (but not that nice) wood chairs for a whopping 450 bucks! Are you kidding me? I knew I could make these very same chairs for under $100 in supplies and a few hours of labor… with the right plans!

Well, guess what. I got the right plans. I spent $115 in materials (close enough, right?). I took about a day and a half of my time to do it… and my chairs were much cooler than the ones I saw at the department store. Better quality, too!

So I might already know the question you’re probably asking. Where the heck did I find the right furniture woodworking plans to make this happen? Well, I’ll tell you where I didn’t find them. I didn’t find them in the land of “Soon Enough!”

Expensive catalogues and free sample plans came my way, but these woodworking plans for furniture practically required me to go get my PhD in physics just to understand the freakin’ things. I mean, shouldn’t it be as easy as “cut it like this, put it together like this, sand it, pat yourself on the back?”

I thought so. That’s what I had personally been searching for, anyway. Something profoundly effective, but so simple that a preschooler could figure it out.

What I found was maybe a little more complex than that, but not much more.

The resource I finally found was actually online. It’s a one-time fee (it’s tiny… like 45 bucks or so) membership database of thousands upon thousands upon thousands of professional quality woodworking plans – that you don’t have to be a professional woodworker to understand!

If you’re wanting some good furniture woodworking plans that are easy to understand and provide a ton of variety, the resource I personally found for myself definitely over-delivers. I ended up with 14,000 (yes, that’s fourteen thousand) woodworking plans that range from practical to extravagant!

I don’t know if I’ll be making a pool table, gazebo, or shed (all of which I now have plans for!) anytime in the very near future, but I’ve got plans to build some nice patio furniture, cabinets, tables, chairs, baby furniture… heck, I may even try to build myself a custom-made guitar! I found plans for all this stuff, and much more. Did I mention… fourteen thousand woodworking plans?

I’ll never get bored. Neither will you.
